NEWS, OPENINGS, UPDATES: 2008

WINTER-SPRING , 2008 | Margot and David Wizansky, founders of Specialized Housing, Inc., were named Social Workers of the Year, 2007 by the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, honored for their work in creating housing for adults with disabilities.

The first Brookline household is planning a 25th anniversary celebration. All of the original members of the household still live together, working, taking care of their house, and enjoying their community. One Brookline household celebrated 20 years of independent living in 2007 with a festive reception at Boston College. The college is a very enlightened employer of a number of people served by Specialized Housing.

HOME OWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: 2008

Since 1983, Specialized Housing has been organizing and managing condominiums with supports, which are owned by the resident or his/her family. Families have a significant role in the ongoing operations of the household. Units can be bought and sold like any other real estate with the proviso that they must be occupied by adults with disabilities. Disabilities can fall within a broad range as long as the individual can manage with the level of staffing the program provides. Specialized Housing assists in determining potential subsidies and sources of funds. From time to time units become available in established households. Please contact us to learn about current openings. We can help you determine your housing needs and work with you to create new housing arrangements. The following are typical opportunities that may be available.

• NEW PROJECTS:  Specialized Housing works with families everywhere, individually or in groups, to develop the housing of their choice in the location of their choice.

• CAMBRIDGE, MA:  A unit in a four bedroom apartment in Cambridge Cohousing, a 41-unit condominium community, collectively planned and financed by the owners, who have chosen to be in “a group of people who believe in looking out for each other.” Four adults with disabilities live as part of this group with staff support, sharing all of the privileges and responsibilities of the cohousing community.

• BROOKLINE & ARLINGTON, MA:  Units in established households of working people. Lovely Victorian houses, completely remodeled, air conditioned, conveniently located.

• APARTMENTS:  Specialized Housing supports people—individuals, couples, roommates--who live in rental apartments or in their own houses or condos and need limited services. We provide on-site assistance and emergency on-call service. New apartments can be added at any time.

For families interested in exploring the concept of home ownership for their family member, we hold informational meetings, give tours, etc. We are available for workshops or group informational meetings. Please email us.
